My paternal great grandmother’s family, the Wallaces, have been traced to Fettercairn, a small village in Kincardineshire, which is now part of the Aberdeenshire council area. They later moved to Logie Pert in Angus (formerly Forfarshire) and subsequent generations settled primarily in the county town of Arbroath and further south in Kirkcaldy, Leslie and the new town of Glenrothes in Fife.
The Wallaces were an upper working-class family. A significant number were skilled tradesmen while others found employment in the retail sector and in clerical positions, and many females worked in domestic service. There was a significant family tradition of tailoring in the earlier generations. Later generations were upwardly mobile, with many individuals in Canada, the United States and Australia pursuing successful professional careers.
Except for those descendants of Elizabeth Wallace and Alexander Smart who emigrated to Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the Wallaces, whom I traced back to c. 1788, remained in Scotland, and many were still living there at the turn of the 21st century.
