The Bamfords are my mother’s family. They originated from Lancashire, specifically from a farming community between Preston and Liverpool and came to Ireland during the Plantation of Ulster in the 17th century.
The Bamfords in the latter half of the 18th century were urban, skilled manual workers rather than rural, agricultural labourers. In contrast to the many people who emigrated from Ulster in the 19th and 20th centuries, only two of the Bamfords did: my grandfather, Sayers, and his brother John. Their history, which I have traced back to the mid-18th century, is that of a typical Ulster, lower middle class, Protestant, Unionist family.
